The FCC has recently designated the 3-digit number 988 to serve as the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. Beginning July 16, 2022, callers in crisis will be routed to trained mental health counselors when dialing 988. Think of it as the 911 for mental health emergencies.
What This Means For You
To ensure that all calls to 988 reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, providers are required to mandate 10-digit dialing across our network. This means callers will be required to input both the area code and telephone number to connect, even when making local calls.
This requirement goes into effect October 24, 2021. On and after this date, calls dialed with only 7 digits may not be completed.
